I Cold-Messaged 147 CFOs on LinkedIn. 8 Became Paying Clients. Here's What Worked.

At Finvestfx, I had no SDRs, no marketing budget, and a forex platform nobody had heard of. I needed 10 enterprise clients in 6 months or we'd miss our runway target. Here's the very unsexy playbook that actually worked.

At Finvestfx, I had a problem. We'd built a treasury management platform for mid-market companies, and I needed to sign 10 enterprise clients in 6 months. No sales team. No brand. Just me, a product that worked, and a spreadsheet of company names.

I cold-messaged 147 CFOs and finance heads on LinkedIn. 23 responded. 12 took calls. 8 became paying clients.

This isn't a growth hack. It's just what happens when you can't afford to wait for inbound leads.

Start With Companies That Already Have the Problem You Solve

I didn't target random Fortune 500s. I looked for companies doing $10M to $100M in annual revenue with cross-border transactions. How did I know? I checked their about pages, looked at their vendors, read their hiring posts for finance roles.

The filter was simple: if they're hiring a treasury analyst or mention forex exposure in a funding announcement, they feel the pain.

I made a list of 200 companies. Then I found the CFO or VP Finance on LinkedIn. Not the CEO. Not the founder. The person who actually deals with forex reconciliation headaches every month.

At Sonic Linker, I did the same thing but for sales teams drowning in manual lead enrichment work. I searched LinkedIn for "head of sales" at B2B SaaS companies with 20 to 100 employees. These were teams big enough to have pipeline problems but small enough that the head of sales still cared about tooling.

The pattern: find people who wake up with your problem, not people who might theoretically have it someday.

Your First Message Needs to Prove You've Done Your Homework

I didn't send "Hey, we help companies save money on forex." That's spam.

I sent: "Saw you're expanding into Southeast Asia based on your recent hire. Most finance teams we work with lose 2 to 4% on forex spreads when they scale into new regions. We built a platform that cuts that to under 1%. Worth a 15-minute call?"

Specific. Relevant. Short.

At Finvestfx, one message mentioned a client's supplier in Vietnam because I saw it in a press release. The CFO replied in 20 minutes. We closed the deal in 6 weeks.

The trick is to make it obvious you picked them for a reason, not because you scraped a database.

The First Call Is Not a Demo. It's a Diagnosis.

When someone agreed to a call, I didn't pitch. I asked questions:

  • How are you handling forex reconciliation today?
  • What breaks when volumes spike?
  • Who else touches this process?

I took notes. I repeated their pain points back to them. Then I said, "Here's what we built for a company with a similar setup. Want me to show you how it works for your specific case?"

Only then did I screen-share.

At Sonic Linker, I'd ask sales teams to walk me through their lead enrichment workflow. I'd watch them tab between LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and Google. Then I'd say, "What if this took 10 seconds instead of 10 minutes?" and show them exactly that workflow automated.

Half the battle is making people realize their current process is broken. The other half is showing them it doesn't have to be.

Pilots Beat Contracts Early On

I didn't close 8 clients with annual contracts. I closed them with 30-day pilots at a discount.

"Use it for a month. If it doesn't save you at least 10 hours of manual work, don't pay us."

Low risk. Clear outcome. Easy yes.

Six of those eight pilots converted to paid annual deals. The two that didn't gave me feedback that helped us fix onboarding issues for the next batch.

At Finvestfx, one pilot client became our biggest advocate. They introduced us to three other CFOs in their network. That's how you go from 8 clients to 15 without spending another dollar.

You Don't Need a Sales Team. You Need Discipline and a Spreadsheet.

I tracked every message, every call, every follow-up in a Google Sheet. Columns: Company, Contact, Message Sent, Response, Next Step, Status.

Every Monday, I sent 20 new messages. Every Wednesday, I followed up with non-responders from two weeks prior. Every Friday, I moved deals forward or marked them dead.

It's boring. It's manual. It works.

The math is simple: if 15% of people respond and 30% of those convert to calls and 50% of calls turn into pilots and 70% of pilots convert, you need to message about 150 people to close 8 deals.

So I messaged 150 people.

The Real Unlock: Solve One Specific Problem Really Well

The companies that said yes didn't care that we were a small startup. They cared that we solved their exact problem better than anyone else.

At Finvestfx, we didn't try to be a full ERP. We just nailed forex reconciliation. At Sonic Linker, we didn't build a CRM. We built the fastest lead enrichment tool that plugged into their existing CRM.

Narrow beats broad when you're starting out.

If you're trying to land your first 10 enterprise clients, forget about brand and inbound. Just find 150 people with a specific problem, prove you understand it, and make it easy for them to say yes.

That's the whole playbook.
